Shocking, No Actually Expected.....
you want a crisis, i will give you a crisis.....is anyone really surprised that this is playing out? britain is once again finding out that the country it has most in common with is not any of its european brethren but its american allie overseas.....chirac and schroder are at the end of their political ropes and blair has probably decided that making them angry does not matter at this point politically.
chirac as per usual has started his polite recriminations against the stance of britain, what interest me is what britain will say now........seems to me that britain is holding the power in her hands, if it decides to tell the euros to go to pot it could end the euro vision (not the dance contest - but the utopian dream) in a moments notice.......i dont think that is going to happen but i suspect the brits are about to play some hard ball. here's the quote.........from the ny times article.....
".........Germany's chancellor, Gerhard Schröder, stood behind Mr. Chirac. He attributed the impasse to "the stubbornness" of Britain and the Netherlands, and in particular he accused Britain of "not helping the new countries."
"My enthusiasm for Europe has suffered a profound shock," said Jean-Claude Juncker, Luxembourg's prime minister and the current European Union president, after the talks broke down. "People will tell you that Europe is not in crisis. It is in a deep crisis."........
